A horrifying spectacle stunned residents of the Bharatgarh area in South 24 Parganas on Saturday morning when a man walked the streets in broad daylight carrying a blood-soaked severed head in one hand and a sharp weapon in the other.
The man, later identified as Bimal Mandal, 57, shocked bystanders as he wandered through the locality before calmly entering the Basanti police station, still holding the severed head. Police said he later confessed during interrogation that the head belonged to his sister-in-law, Sachi Mandal.
The motive behind the brutal killing remains uncertain, though preliminary police assessments suggest the accused may be mentally unstable.
Ramkumar Mondal, SDPO of Canning, told reporters: “The accused has been arrested and is under interrogation. We’ve recovered the weapon and sent the woman’s body for post-mortem. Whether this was triggered by a family dispute or something deeper is yet to be determined. We are also evaluating his mental health and may involve psychologists if necessary.”

The shocking act left the community in disbelief. Several residents, who witnessed the gruesome sight, said Bimal appeared disoriented and muttered to himself while walking along the road. One eyewitness recounted: “At first, I thought he was carrying something wrapped. But as he came closer, I saw it was a woman’s head and blood was dripping from it. It was terrifying.”
Police said they later took the accused to the crime scene, where the headless and mutilated body of Sachi Mandal was discovered. The remains were sent for autopsy, and the blood-stained weapon was seized for forensic analysis.
Officers are yet to determine whether the murder was spontaneous or planned. Investigations continue, with local authorities promising a psychological evaluation of the accused.
