A 23-year-old man was arrested in Indore district, Madhya Pradesh, on Friday for allegedly slitting a woman's throat after she refused to talk to him, police said.
The accused, Aman Sheikh, attacked the woman, an MBA student, with a knife in Sanwer town, about 40 km from the city, on Thursday afternoon, an official said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Umakant Chaudhary said that the injured woman was taken to a private hospital and is now out of danger.
The woman said she and the accused graduated from the same college. She explained that he would often follow her and try to talk to her. On the day of the attack, when she refused to speak to him, he argued with her and then attacked her with a knife.
The woman's family claims that Sheikh had been harassing her for the past three years and did not stop despite warnings.
The attack caused anger in the area, and on Friday, markets and businesses in Sanwer were closed for half a day following a call from local Hindu groups.
The official stated that the situation in Sanwer is now peaceful.
