A group of 19 BJP MLAs in Manipur, including Speaker Thokchom Satyavrat Singh and key ministers, has petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the removal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
The MLAs, representing diverse communities such as Meitei, Kuki, and Naga, have raised concerns over the government’s inability to restore peace and stability in the state, which has been marred by communal tensions.
They emphasised that the ongoing conflict between communities cannot be resolved through security forces alone and warned of irreparable damage to the state’s integrity and India’s global reputation.
In their letter to the Prime Minister, the legislators stated that replacing Biren Singh is the only viable solution to ease tensions and resume dialogue among the communities.
"We, as fervent supporters of the BJP and having received a mandate from the people, feel a responsibility to save Manipur while also protecting the BJP from downfall in the state," the letter stated.
They also highlighted the pressure from their constituents to resign if peace efforts remain stagnant, underscoring their duty to safeguard both Manipur and the BJP from further political fallout.
The MLAs stressed the need for critical introspection of the factors hindering dialogue and called for immediate action to create a conducive atmosphere for negotiations.
"In light of these facts, we implore immediate action to initiate peace dialogue with all stakeholders to safeguard Manipur before it is too late," the letter said.
