A 15-member Congress delegation on Wednesday met with Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhavan, seeking his intervention to restore peace in the violence-ridden state.
The Congress also organised a "Raj Bhavan march" as part of a nationwide programme condemning the alleged "misrule" of the Centre.
However, Congress workers were blocked by security forces as they attempted to march towards the Raj Bhavan, resulting in a scuffle.
Rapid Action Force personnel baton-charged the protesters, leaving several Congress activists injured.
Keisham Meghachandra, Congress' state unit chief, speaking after the meeting, said, “Fifteen representatives of the Congress called on the governor. We conveyed to the governor that we wanted peace and urged him to do something to restore normalcy. We also informed him that the Constitution is not being safeguarded and everyone is affected.”
During the protest, Keisham held a copy of the Constitution and stated, “Everyone, including MLAs, is affected. We are unable to tolerate the suffering of people."
Keisham added that the governor had given the delegation a patient hearing. He noted that although they had met Acharya previously in Guwahati, no change had been observed in the situation.
“The government has not initiated anything to bring peace... Whenever a leader or a minister says on a public platform that there will be a firing the next day, it sends a wrong message,” he claimed.
The Congress delegation also demanded the immediate resettlement of internally displaced people to their homes and the secure movement of citizens across districts.
