The death toll in the recent firing by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Manipur has risen to three, with a 31-year-old man succumbing to injuries on Wednesday, even as authorities partially restored broadband services amid continuing tensions.

The deceased, identified as Wanghengbam Bobby from Kumbi Terakhong Makha Leikai in Bishnupur district, died at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, where he had been undergoing treatment for bullet injuries to his torso. His body has been kept in the hospital mortuary, officials said.

The firing incident followed a fresh spell of violence on Tuesday, triggered by an attack allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants. A rocket-propelled projectile struck a residence in Moirang Tronglaobi Makha Leikai, killing two children, a five-year-old boy and his six-month-old sister, intensifying tensions in the region.

In the aftermath, an agitated mob stormed a CRPF camp at Gelmol in Churachandpur district, near Tronglaobi village. The mob allegedly vandalised the camp and torched several vehicles, prompting security forces to open fire to bring the situation under control.

Five persons were injured in the firing. Two of them died on Tuesday, while Bobby succumbed to his injuries a day later, taking the toll to three.

Security forces have since launched a crackdown in connection with the Tronglaobi incident, detaining three individuals. Officials have not yet confirmed whether those held were directly involved in the initial attack.

Amid the volatile situation, the Manipur government has announced a partial relaxation of internet restrictions. Broadband services, including ILL and FTTH connections, have been restored on a conditional basis following a review of disruptions to essential services.

Authorities said the suspension had affected critical sectors such as courts, healthcare, education, taxation, and citizen services, necessitating calibrated restoration.

Officials, however, emphasised that internet access would remain subject to strict safeguards to prevent misuse and ensure public order.

The situation across parts of Manipur remains tense, with security forces maintaining a heavy presence. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue and efforts are underway to stabilise the law and order situation.
