Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Monday announced the destruction of 18,000 hectares of poppy fields and the seizure of drugs worth Rs 60,000 crore across the state.
The announcement was made during the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) at Loktak Hall, Manipur Press Club in Imphal.
Addressing the event, Singh highlighted the severe impact of the crisis on the state, noting the loss of lives and the displacement of many residents into relief camps.
He talked about the crucial role of media in disseminating accurate information during these times of uncertainty and urged media houses to ensure their reporting is based on verified facts to prevent the spread of misinformation.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the government’s anti-drug operations are aimed at preserving the state's welfare and not targeting any specific community.
The destruction of poppy fields is part of a broader strategy to combat drug trafficking and safeguard reserved forests in the region.
Singh also reassured the media community of the government's support through various welfare schemes. He welcomed constructive suggestions for restoring peace and stressed the need for collective unity to overcome the current crisis.
The event was attended by Minister for IPR Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, AMWJU President Bijoy Kakchingtabam, Editors’ Guild Manipur President Khogendra Khomdram, and other media personnel.
