Over the past five years, Manipur has detected 10,675 illegal immigrants, Chief Minister N Biren Singh revealed in the Assembly on Friday.
Responding to a query from MLA Surjakumar Okram during the budget session, Singh detailed the origins and status of these individuals.
According to the Chief Minister, the illegal immigrants hail from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Norway, China, and Nepal.
Out of the total, only 85 have been deported in the last five years, while 143 are currently housed in the state's detention centre.
The government has spent Rs 85.55 lakh on maintaining these detainees.
To curb the influx of illegal immigrants, the state government has formed a committee under the Home Department's supervision.
This committee, established by a government order on March 24 last year, conducts verification drives in the Churachandpur, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kamjong, and Pherzawl districts.
Before the outbreak of recent violence, the committee had already identified 2,480 illegal immigrants from Myanmar.
Furthermore, Singh highlighted the central government's initiative to completely fence the Indo-Myanmar border.
Stressing on the significance of the measure, he noted that the border fencing work is already underway, aiming to enhance security and control the movement across the border.
