In a partial relief to residents, the Manipur government has restored broadband internet services in five valley districts, three days after a complete suspension of both mobile and broadband internet. However, the ban on mobile data remains in effect.
The districts where broadband has been reinstated include Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
The internet restrictions were initially imposed to prevent the spread of misinformation and inflammatory posts following alleged "drone attacks" and subsequent protests in Imphal.
The broadband restoration comes as the original five-day suspension period is being relaxed. Despite this, mobile data services continue to be blocked, reflecting ongoing concerns about maintaining order and curbing misinformation.
The ban on internet services did not extend to the hill districts of Manipur, where the ethnic Kuki community resides.
Tensions between the Kuki tribes, who predominantly inhabit the hills, and the Meitei community of the valley have intensified in recent months. This conflict has resulted in over 220 deaths and displaced nearly 50,000 people.
The discord centres around the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, which the Kukis oppose.
The Kukis are advocating for a separate administrative region within Manipur, citing long-standing grievances over perceived discrimination and an uneven allocation of resources.
