Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Thursday that the state government is actively pursuing peace talks amid ongoing violence in the region.
The CM revealed that several meetings have been held in Silchar, Assam, with the assistance of MLAs and other stakeholders.
“We are making immense efforts towards peace talks, and we will soon make an announcement,” Singh stated during the Assembly session, though he did not specify who is participating in the discussions.
He described the current situation as an "unexpected and unwanted turn of events" and emphasised the need for caution in handling law and order.
Singh expressed concern that certain issues are being politicised, complicating the path to resolution.
“There are elements which are politicising certain issues that cannot be immediately handled now. I appeal to all not to engage in such activities,” he urged.
Addressing a query from Congress MLA Ranjit Singh regarding ongoing violence despite the deployment of over 38,000 state forces, Singh informed the Assembly that a retired Supreme Court judge is leading an investigation to identify lapses contributing to the unrest.
“The findings will identify the lapses that contributed to the violence, and responsibility will be fixed based on the inquiry's conclusions,” he added.
In response to Congress MLA Surajkumar Okram's question, Singh disclosed that at least 226 people have died in the violence. He cited mob-like conditions as a factor contributing to delays in arresting suspects in some cases.
