Manipur govt extends services of 10,500 VDF personnel for 1 year

The extension comes in response to growing anxiety among VDF members regarding job security and compensation.

The Village Defence Force (VDF) has evolved into a cornerstone of community-level security and counter-insurgency operations, particularly in vulnerable and conflict-affected regions.

In a significant move to strengthen grassroots security, the Manipur government has approved a one-year extension for the services of 10,500 Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel, extending their deployment across the state until March 31, 2026.

The announcement was made by Mayengbam Veto Singh, Joint Secretary of the Home Department, who emphasised the critical role VDF members play in supporting the Manipur police in maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.

Originally established as an auxiliary force to bolster local policing efforts, the VDF has evolved into a cornerstone of community-level security and counter-insurgency operations, particularly in vulnerable and conflict-affected regions.

“As per their terms of engagement, VDF personnel are appointed for one year with options for renewal based on evolving security needs. This extension follows a thorough review of current conditions and security assessments,” said Singh.

The approval was granted during a meeting of the Governor-in-Council, held on Thursday at the Raj Bhavan and chaired by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The session was also attended by chief secretary Prashant Kumar Singh and senior officials from key departments. In addition to security, the meeting addressed governance reforms, infrastructure development and strategies to enhance public service delivery.

VDF personnel remain instrumental in safeguarding remote villages and assisting law enforcement in managing sensitive zones. Their continued presence is especially vital in insurgency-prone areas, where they help protect civilians and maintain order.

The extension comes in response to growing anxiety among VDF members regarding job security and compensation. The All Manipur VDF Employees’ Welfare Association had recently threatened to stage protests demanding a formal extension of their services and an increase in their monthly honorarium.

Acknowledging these concerns, officials assured that the government is actively working to address the welfare of VDF personnel, recognising their vital contribution to the state’s internal security framework.
