Tensions escalated in Imphal East district on Monday as hundreds of internally displaced people (IDPs) clashed with security forces while trying to return to their native villages. The confrontation occurred at Pukhao and near Dolaithabi Dam, authorities said.

IDPs from Ekou, Dolaithabi and Yengkhuman, who have been residing in relief camps since the 2023 ethnic violence, attempted to march back to their homes. Security personnel intervened, resorting to tear gas to disperse the protesters, officials added.

The displaced villagers argued that the state had restored normalcy, coinciding with the ongoing Sangai festival, and insisted they should be allowed to return.

"We are mostly farmers. Our livelihood has been completely cut off after we were forced to flee our homes. Now that the government has said that normalcy has returned. Our demand is that IDPs be allowed to return to their homes. How long do we stay confined in relief camps. Why can't security forces deal with the militants instead of forcing us to remain in relief camps," said protester S Kumarjit Meitei.

The protest turned chaotic as demonstrators scuffled with security forces while moving towards sensitive zones, prompting authorities to fire tear gas shells to maintain control.

Ekou, Dolaithabi and Yengkhuman lie at the foothills of Imphal East, bordering the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district. The region witnessed severe ethnic clashes last year, leaving more than 260 dead and thousands homeless in violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.
