Manipur's government has imposed a night curfew in Pherzawl and parts of Jiribam district to curb illegal immigration from Bangladesh.

This move follows Meghalaya's decision to enforce a curfew along the international border with Bangladesh amid escalating unrest in the neighbouring country.

The restrictions in Pherzawl will be relaxed between 8 am and 4 pm, while in Jiribam, including areas under Jiribam Municipal Council and Borobekra subdivision, the curfew will be eased from 9 am to 3 pm.

The orders, issued by the District Magistrates of the two districts, prohibit the assembly of five or more persons likely to engage in unlawful activities, movement outside residences, and carrying objects that can be used as offensive weapons.

Jiribam and Pherzawl districts share borders with Assam's Cachar district, which directly borders Bangladesh. Security forces are tasked with strictly enforcing the curfew to maintain law and order. Government agencies and essential services are exempt from these restrictions.

Meghalaya's Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong announced a similar curfew along the 444 km boundary stretch with Bangladesh from 6 pm to 6 am daily, until further notice. This decision came after an urgent meeting with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and Meghalaya Police.

"In view of the volatile situation, the state government has decided to impose a night curfew along the international border with Bangladesh," Tynsong stated.

The BSF has issued a "high alert" across its formations along the 4,096 km India-Bangladesh border in response to the developments in Bangladesh.

According to officials the measures are crucial to preventing any illegal immigration and ensuring the security of the border areas.
