Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has called on his ministers and MLAs to mark this year’s Independence Day by sharing a meal with those displaced by the ongoing ethnic violence in the state.
Addressing the “Tiranga Concerts” on Saturday as part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Singh urged his colleagues to visit the 302 relief camps established across the state and dine with the 59,414 individuals—men, women, and children—who have been forced from their homes.
Singh stressed that the gesture would not only celebrate the nation's independence but also provide an opportunity for elected officials to listen to the concerns and grievances of those affected by the violence.
The ethnic conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, has claimed over 225 lives since May of last year.
The violence has also resulted in the destruction of 11,133 houses, leaving 4,569 homes completely ruined.
In addition to the lunch appeal, Singh directed DGP Rajiv Singh to organise a mass motorcycle rally on August 15, encouraging youth participation to foster a spirit of nationalism.
The Chief Minister noted that a heightened sense of patriotism has been on the rise in India since Narendra Modi assumed office as Prime Minister in 2014.
Singh also encouraged the people of Manipur to actively participate in various activities under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, including rallies, street plays, marathons, and painting competitions.
