At least ten people were injured after a protest over a recent bomb explosion turned violent in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Tuesday, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders to contain the situation.
The clash broke out in the Thingungei area, where residents had gathered to protest the explosion in Tronglaobi that had claimed the lives of two children. Tensions escalated during the day following the circulation of unverified claims about the movement of armed “suspicious individuals”, triggering panic and anger among locals.
According to police, trouble began around 1.30 pm when a security team was stopped by a crowd near Thingungei amid rumours questioning the identity and purpose of the personnel. As the situation grew tense, sections of the gathering turned aggressive, damaging vehicles and attempting to detain security personnel.
The unrest soon spread to nearby Ningthoukhong, where demonstrators confronted security forces. Personnel resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.

More than ten people sustained minor injuries in the clashes, while a four-wheeler was set on fire, police said.
Reinforcements were rushed to the area, and the crowd was eventually dispersed using minimum force. Four individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the violence, and efforts are underway to identify others involved in arson, unlawful assembly and obstruction of duty.
A flag march was conducted later in the affected areas to restore confidence among residents and maintain order.
Authorities have appealed to the public to refrain from spreading misinformation, warning that strict action would be taken against those found inciting violence.
Meanwhile, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) from 5 pm onwards, restricting public movement until further notice.
The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions in parts of Manipur, with authorities maintaining heightened vigil to prevent any further escalation.
