Globally acclaimed 13-year-old climate activist from Manipur, Licypriya Kangujam, has embarked on a seven-day visit to Brazil to participate in the G20 Summit, following an invitation from Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
This year’s summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from 12-19 November, brings together influential global leaders to address pressing issues, with Licypriya representing the concerns of the Global South.
At the summit, Licypriya is expected to urge affluent nations to bear responsibility for climate-related loss and damage in developing nations, focusing on combatting climate disinformation.
Alongside this, she intends to highlight critical issues including the conflict in Manipur and broader international crises.
As the sole child representative at this year’s G20 Summit, Licypriya will join world leaders such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, among others.
This year’s summit is notable for the inclusion of African leaders, as the African Union gained G20 membership during India’s presidency in 2023.
On November 18, the Brazilian Government, in cooperation with Dr Jose Ramos Horta of East Timor, will launch the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, aimed at enhancing social protection, nutrition, and economic development in the world’s least developed nations.
Licypriya’s team has confirmed that she will not be attending the COP29 UN Climate Conference, which opened in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 12 November, as she has chosen to prioritise the G20 Summit, where most world leaders are in attendance.
