A fresh suspected militant ambush in Manipur’s Noney district on Wednesday evening killed one person and injured his wife, even as the state remains on edge following a separate attack earlier in the day in Kangpokpi district in which three church leaders were killed.

According to sources, the latest incident took place between Joujangtek village and Nungsai when the couple was returning to their home in Imphal. The deceased has been identified as Wilson Thanga, a resident of Dolang village.

Police said suspected militants intercepted the vehicle in the Joujangtek area and opened fire on the couple during the late evening hours. Wilson Thanga died on the spot, while his wife sustained injuries and was shifted for medical treatment.

Security forces have launched preliminary investigations and are expected to intensify search operations in the region. No official statement on the identity of the attackers had been issued at the time of filing the report.

The incident comes on a day when Manipur witnessed another major attack in Kangpokpi district, where suspected armed militants ambushed two vehicles carrying church leaders between Kotzim and Kotlen villages.

In that attack, three church leaders were killed and several others injured, triggering widespread condemnation from civil society groups and political leaders across the state. The victims were reportedly returning from a religious gathering when they were fired upon.

The twin incidents within hours have heightened security concerns across Manipur’s hill districts, which have seen recurring episodes of violence and militant activity over the past year.

Security agencies have stepped up vigilance in both Kangpokpi and Noney districts, with additional forces deployed to prevent further escalation. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, while investigations into both attacks are underway.
