Security forces in Manipur have intensified operations against insurgent groups and criminal networks, leading to multiple arrests, seizures of narcotics and illegal arms, according to an official statement by the Manipur Police.
An alleged extortionist and active cadre of the Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) and its armed wing, the People's Liberation Army (PLA), was arrested on Saturday. The suspect has been identified as Thokchom Kheljit Meitei alias Canny (48), a resident of Naoremthong Khumanthem Leikai under Lamphel Police Station. A mobile phone was seized from his possession.
In a separate operation, an active cadre of the United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK), Kharibam Boynao Meitei alias Lamngakpa (32), was arrested from his residence in Ishingthembi Mapal Leikai under Sagolmang Police Station in Imphal East district.
Further intensifying the crackdown, a joint team of security forces and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) intercepted two vehicles transporting narcotics and seized 207 soap cases of heroin. Two individuals, Paumuanlian Tungnung (23) and Lianminthang Neihsial (26), were arrested in connection with the seizure.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, a training session on the investigation of cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) was conducted at the Tengnoupal district Police Headquarters. Public prosecutors and senior officials imparted guidance to investigating officers, stressing the need for better coordination between police and prosecution.
In earlier operations on Friday, security forces arrested an alleged illegal arms dealer, Md. Sanajaoba (30), from Porompat Ayangpalli Road. Three locally made firearms and two magazines were seized from him. Another individual, Moirangthem Bijen Singh (55), was apprehended from Jiribam district, and two hand grenades along with five rounds of ammunition were recovered from his possession.
Additionally, two exploded 81 mm mortar bombs were recovered from Matijang and Phuoljang villages under Churachandpur Police Station in Churachandpur district.
Police stated that search operations and area domination exercises are ongoing across vulnerable and fringe areas of the state. Intelligence-based combing operations, including cordon-and-search drives, are being carried out extensively to curb extortion and other criminal activities.
Authorities also ensured the safe movement of 261 vehicles carrying essential goods along NH-37 under tight security arrangements. A total of 114 checkpoints were set up across hill and valley districts, although no detentions were reported at these points.
The police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and avoid spreading or believing in rumours, particularly misleading content circulating on social media.
