The Manipur government has rescinded its previous order to resume normal classes, announcing that all schools in the valley districts will remain closed on November 25 and 26.
The decision came after initial orders to reopen schools from November 25 were cancelled late on Sunday.
Director of Education (Schools), L. Nandakumar, confirmed that the order for school resumption, issued on November 24, had been revoked.
"The school opening order of even number dated 24th November 2024, regarding resumption of normal classes for all schools of the state, Government, Government Aided, Private and Central schools, is hereby cancelled," he said in a statement.
The closure affects schools in the valley districts, which include Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal.
The decision is part of a broader response to continuing unrest following recent violent protests and the recovery of the bodies of six civilians.
The curfew imposed in these districts remains in effect, with relaxed hours from 5 a.m. to 12 noon on Sunday, allowing residents to purchase essentials.
The education department's decision to close schools again comes after authorities had previously issued orders to resume classes on November 25, which would have included all schools and colleges across the state.
There was, however, no official order about resumption for colleges and universities.
On November 17, curfews were imposed across the state after widespread protests erupted over the recovery of the bodies of three women and three children, believed to have been victims of an encounter between militants and security forces on November 11.
The tragic and unfortunate events have triggered ongoing tensions in the valley and adjacent areas in Manipur.
In addition to the closure of schools, mobile internet services continue to be suspended in nine districts, including Imphal West and Imphal East, until November 25.
