Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh leads tributes at Khongjom War Memorial in Thoubal on Thursday, laying wreaths and observing ceremonial honours on Khongjom Day to honour soldiers of the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War.

Manipur on Thursday observed Khongjom Day under heightened security across Thoubal district, commemorating the sacrifice of Manipuri soldiers who fought against British colonial forces in 1891 during the historic Anglo-Manipur War.

The main function was held at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex, where Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the ceremony. Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, and senior civil and police officials were also present, underscoring the significance of the annual observance.

The programme began with the laying of floral wreaths at the memorial, followed by full ceremonial honours. These included a Guard of Honour, General Salute, Reverse Arms, the sounding of the Last Post, a two-minute silence, and the traditional Slope Arms and Order Arms, all conducted in solemn remembrance of those who laid down their lives.

As part of the tribute, floral wreaths were also placed at the statue of Paona Brajabashi, one of the most revered figures of the Anglo-Manipur War. A gun salute accompanied the homage, while traditional tarpon rituals were performed along the Khongjom River, symbolising respect for the fallen soldiers.

Khongjom Day commemorates the Battle of Khongjom, fought on April 23, 1891, marking the final resistance of the Manipuri kingdom against British forces during the Anglo-Manipur War.

The battle took place in present-day Thoubal district, where Manipuri soldiers, led by figures such as Paona Brajabashi, faced a far superior and better-armed British force. Despite being outnumbered, they fought with exceptional courage, often engaging in close combat. Paona Brajabashi’s refusal to surrender and choice of death became a lasting symbol of valour.

The defeat at Khongjom ended organised resistance and brought Manipur under British control. Today, the day holds deep emotional and cultural significance, remembered as a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Manipuri people.

Meanwhile, authorities had put in place extensive security arrangements in and around Thoubal district, particularly along routes leading to the memorial site, to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the event. Security personnel were deployed in large numbers, reflecting both the importance of the day and the need for vigilance amid the region’s sensitivities.

The annual commemoration continues to serve as a poignant reminder of the valour displayed by Manipuri soldiers more than a century ago. Beyond its ceremonial aspects, Khongjom Day remains an important occasion for reaffirming cultural identity and collective memory in the state.

Observed with solemnity and pride, the event not only honours the legacy of the 1891 heroes but also reinforces the enduring spirit of resistance and unity among the people of Manipur.
