Police found the body of a Maoist who was killed in a gunfight on Sunday afternoon in the forests between Narayanpur and Kanker districts in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region.

On Monday around 2:30 pm, security forces confirmed the discovery of the body. A self-loading rifle (SLR) was also recovered. The deceased was wearing the uniform of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), the armed wing of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Acting on intelligence about the presence of armed Maoists from the North Bastar and Maad divisions, security forces—including the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Border Security Force (BSF)—launched an operation. Around 12:30 pm on Sunday, an exchange of fire began and continued for several hours.

“There is a chance that more Maoists were killed or injured. Search operations are still ongoing,” a police officer said.

So far this year, 50 Maoists have been killed in encounters in Chhattisgarh, including 34 in the Bastar region. Meanwhile, nine security personnel and a civilian driver have lost their lives in Maoist attacks.
