The leader of a Maoist splinter group called JSMM was beaten to death, and two other members were seriously injured after villagers allegedly attacked them in Latehar district, Jharkhand, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place in Bari village, under Chandwa Police Station, on Monday night.
The clash took place between members of the banned group Jharkhand Sangharsh Mukti Morcha and local villagers over extortion, according to a senior police officer.
Latehar’s Superintendent of Police, Kumar Gaurav, said, "Seven members of the group went to a brick kiln in the village to extort money, which led to the fight. Kishore, also known as Abhay Nayak, the leader of JSMM, and two other members were beaten, while four managed to escape."
Nayak later died from his injuries at Chandwa hospital, and the other injured members are receiving treatment.
The officer added that Nayak had a criminal history and had been to jail before.
