Maoists once again unleashed violence in the Saranda forests of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand by setting ablaze a mobile tower in Bahda village under Chotanagara area late on Monday night, creating panic among locals.
According to sources, a group of armed ultras arrived at the tower site and threatened the employees present there, forcing them to flee. The Maoists then poured petrol on the installation and set it on fire. Within minutes, the tower was engulfed in flames, disrupting communication in the surrounding areas. The incident has triggered fear and tension in the region.
During the attack, the extremists also raised slogans and put up posters as part of their ongoing campaign. The CPI (Maoist) is observing ‘Resistance Week’ from October 8 to 14, and has called for a shutdown across five states, including Jharkhand, on October 15.
Security officials said that several top Maoist leaders, including Rs 1 crore rewardee Misir Besra, are still active in the dense Saranda jungles along with Asim Mandal, Ajay Mahato, Anmol, Mochu, Sagen Angaria, Ashwin, Pintu, Chandan Lohar, and Rapa Munda. Many of them carry bounties ranging between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 25 lakh.
Following the incident, police and CRPF personnel have intensified search operations in the area. Senior officials described the act as a desperate attempt by Maoists to assert their presence amid increasing pressure from security forces in the region.
