A shocking crime has rattled Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri district after police arrested a man accused of murdering his wife, dismembering her body and carrying her heart and other organs in a plastic bag.

The accused, identified as Ramesh Roy, a daily wage labourer, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday from a bamboo grove during an overnight police search operation. Officers riding motorcycles to access the remote pockets of the area found him hiding with the plastic bag by his side.

"Ramesh was hiding inside the bamboo grove. We found him with the bag containing his wife’s body parts. On seeing us, he clutched it tightly and initially refused to hand it over. There was no visible remorse in his behaviour after murdering his 45-year-old wife Deepali,” said Subal Chandra Ghosh, inspector-in-charge of Maynaguri police station.

The gruesome discovery came to light after Ramesh allegedly showed his wife’s dismembered organs to a neighbour, Sanatan Roy and his son Bablu, on Friday evening. Alarmed, they rushed to Ramesh’s house, where they found Deepali’s body lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit and stomach cut open.

“Ramesh had no fixed income. Sometimes he earned by fishing in local waterbodies or selling bananas from the trees in his courtyard. He often argued with his wife over trivial matters, but we never imagined he could do something like this,” said Sanatan Roy.

Preliminary investigation suggests that Ramesh may have been suffering from mental health issues. “According to neighbours, he often lost his temper and turned violent. However, police said no medical evidence is available to confirm this, as he never underwent treatment due to financial constraints We are consulting doctors to ascertain his exact mental condition,” Ghosh said.

Ramesh’s daughter Udayini, who is married and lives in the same district, expressed disbelief over the incident.

“I cannot imagine my father could commit such a heinous act. He had mental problems, but we never thought it would lead to something this horrific,” she said.

Ramesh’s son Bikram works as a daily labourer in Sikkim.

Police have recovered a blood-stained dagger from the victim’s house, believed to be the murder weapon. “We are yet to establish the exact motive behind the crime, or what drove Ramesh not only to kill his wife but also dismember her and carry her organs in a plastic bag,” said Shantinath Panja, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Maynaguri.
