A 22-year-old student of a private medical college in Durgapur was found hanging inside a hostel toilet on Sunday morning, triggering concern among students and prompting a police investigation into the circumstances of his death.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Lavanya Pratap, a resident of Patna in Bihar. He was staying in the college hostel while pursuing his medical studies.
Friends of the student told investigators that he had been under mental stress after failing in the last few semesters. Police are examining whether the death was a case of suicide or if there were any other factors involved.
The incident came to light on Saturday night when fellow students found his body hanging in the hostel toilet and alerted the authorities. Personnel from the Durgapur police station reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem on Sunday.
Investigators said the exact cause of death would be ascertained after the autopsy report is received. The student’s family has been informed, and police are investigating the case.
The incident has drawn attention because the same college had been in the spotlight last year over an alleged gang-rape of a medical student. The case, which is currently pending in court, had triggered widespread protests across the state at the time.
