Meghalaya's Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh, has unveiled the state government's ambitious plan to collaborate with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the expansion of Umroi airport, commonly known as the Shillong Airport.

This initiative aims to enhance connectivity and bolster tourism prospects across the region.

Minister Lyngdoh disclosed that discussions are currently underway with the AAI to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed expansion.

The government seeks to determine the feasibility of expanding the existing infrastructure at the Shillong airport to meet the escalating demand for air travel.

Highlighting the pressing need for improved air linkages, particularly between Shillong and Bhopal, Minister Lyngdoh referenced a recent plea from the Meghalaya High Court.

The court's request underlined the significance of facilitating seamless travel for judges while reducing the time and expenses associated with commuting between the two cities.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by the absence of a major airport, Minister Lyngdoh assured that the Tourism Department is resolutely committed to surmounting these obstacles.

He accentuated the department's proactive stance in addressing infrastructural deficiencies hindering the development of tourism in the state.

The proposal to expand Umroi airport reflects the state government's proactive approach to infrastructure development and tourism promotion.

By enhancing air connectivity, authorities aim to attract a larger influx of tourists to Meghalaya, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage.

Minister Lyngdoh expressed optimism about the forthcoming outcomes and indicated that the airport expansion project would advance further following the conclusion of elections and the lifting of the code of conduct.
