The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved direct purchase of land in East and North Garo Hills to create a dedicated land reserve aimed at accelerating infrastructure development and avoiding delays in project execution.
The decision is intended to ensure that key public projects do not face hurdles arising from land acquisition challenges, particularly in remote and underdeveloped regions.
Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said limited land availability has increasingly become a major constraint for large-scale development works.
He added that securing land in advance would allow future projects to proceed smoothly without administrative or procedural delays.
Under the plan, the government will purchase around 93.5 acres in Rongjeng in East Garo Hills at an estimated cost of ₹7 crore. In North Garo Hills, about 26 acres in the Mendipathar region will be acquired at a cost of approximately ₹3.9 crore.

Officials said the move is expected to facilitate the establishment of administrative centres, hospitals, universities and other essential services across the state.
They noted that opting for direct purchase would significantly reduce both the time required and the overall cost compared to conventional acquisition processes.
The land acquired will be reserved exclusively for future development projects, enabling more structured and timely infrastructure growth.
The initiative reflects a shift towards long-term planning, with the government aiming to build a ready land bank to support expanding public infrastructure needs.
