Taking a leap step towards transforming its tourism landscape, the Meghalaya government on Wednesday announced plans to introduce helicopter services exclusively for tourists.
The initiative, described as a game-changer by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, seeks to offer seamless connectivity between the state’s iconic attractions.
The new helicopter services will initially link key tourist circuits, including Guwahati to Shillong, Umroi Airport, Umiam, Sohra, Dawki, and New Shillong.
This strategic move is aimed at reducing travel time and enhancing the overall tourist experience.
Paul Lyngdoh elaborated on the government’s plans, saying, “This service will not only connect major tourist hotspots but also highlight Meghalaya's natural splendour from an aerial perspective. We are committed to improving travel options for both domestic and international visitors.”
The initiative comes alongside efforts to bolster road connectivity, particularly in remote areas such as Mawsynram.
A new museum being developed in the region is expected to further boost cultural tourism.
Surging tourism numbers
Meghalaya has already recorded a sharp increase in tourist footfall, surpassing 15 lakh visitors this year.
With helicopter services and better infrastructure on the horizon, the state anticipates a 60 per cent rise in arrivals by 2025, according to estimates.
A recent survey by Skyscanner has crowned Shillong as the most preferred destination among Indian tourists.
Other popular attractions such as Sohra (Cherrapunji) and Dawki are expected to benefit significantly from improved accessibility.
The state government is also working on expanding tourism-supportive infrastructure.
“Better facilities and connectivity are integral to sustaining our growth in tourism. We are focused on addressing these areas,” Lyngdoh emphasised.
As part of the broader development plan, roads leading to prominent tourist spots will be upgraded to ensure smoother travel for visitors.
The helicopter service is envisioned as the first of many innovations to cement Meghalaya’s reputation as a world-class destination.
With its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and now, cutting-edge connectivity options, Meghalaya is poised to redefine tourism in northeast India.
