The death toll in the illegal coal mine blast in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district climbed to 27 on Saturday after two more bodies were recovered, as a multi-agency search operation continued and investigations pointed to large-scale illegal mining in the area.
The bodies were found during ongoing search efforts at the Thangsku area of Umsngat village, where the explosion occurred on Thursday. Several persons remain missing, and authorities said rescue and recovery operations would continue.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said work was under way to establish the identities of the deceased. A suo motu FIR has been registered at Khliehriat police station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and the Explosive Substances Act.
Two persons, Forme Chyrmang (36) of Jalaphet Pordung village and Shamehi War (42) of Sutnga Pohwailong village, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced ex gratia assistance for the victims’ families. He said the Centre was extending all possible support to the Meghalaya government in rescue and relief efforts.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he had reviewed the situation and assured full central assistance. He said strict action would be taken against those responsible for the illegal mining activity and any lapses in enforcement.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma reiterated that the state government has zero tolerance for illegal coal mining and said the administration had been directed to intensify enforcement and ensure accountability. He added that those involved would not be spared.
Justice (retd) BP Katakey, who is overseeing compliance related to mining issues in Meghalaya, visited the blast site on Saturday. According to officials, he confirmed that illegal mining was being carried out on a large scale in the locality.
