The Meghalaya government on Thursday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Meghalaya High Court's order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in the northeastern state last year.
The state's appeal was mentioned before a Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who sought an urgent hearing against the High Court's June 29 order.
Mehta argued that the High Court had erred in granting bail on the ground that the accused had not been supplied with the grounds of her arrest. He submitted that the issue arose solely because of a typographical error in the citation of a legal provision and did not amount to a violation that warranted the grant of bail.
The Solicitor General further told the court that there was a possibility of Sonam Raghuvanshi absconding if she continued to remain on bail, and urged the apex court to intervene.

Taking note of the submissions, the Bench agreed to list the matter for hearing on Friday.
On June 29, the Meghalaya High Court upheld a trial court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, observing that the investigating agency had failed to furnish the grounds of arrest to the accused in accordance with legal requirements.
The case stems from the alleged murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, who had travelled to Meghalaya with his wife for their honeymoon in May 2025. The couple went missing while visiting Sohra on May 23. Raja's body was recovered from a deep gorge on June 2, triggering a high-profile investigation.
According to the Meghalaya Police, Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly conspired with hired assailants to murder her husband for financial gain. The police have maintained that she played a central role in planning the crime. The investigation into the case is continuing.
