Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti congratulated Zohran Mamdani on Thursday on his “stunning victory” as New York City’s first-ever Muslim and 111th mayor, calling it a triumph over rising “fascism, money power and Islamophobia”.
In her statement on X, the former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir said Mamdani’s victory marks not only a historic milestone, but also a powerful stand against divisive forces.
“Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on his stunning victory as New York City’s 111th & first Muslim Mayor, a triumph that marks not only a historic milestone but also a powerful stand against the entrenched forces of fascism, money power & Islamophobia,” she wrote.
Mehbooba said Mamdani’s “unwavering progressive vision and steadfast commitment to justice” had prevailed over an “aggressive hate campaign led by none other than US President Donald Trump”.
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and son of filmmaker Mira Nair, made history by becoming the first Muslim to lead America’s largest city, defeating his Republican rival in a fiercely contested race.
Mamdani’s victory has triggered a political firestorm in the United States, especially in pro-Israel lobbies and capitalist ventures.
Mamdani had, on Wednesday, challenged the Trump administration for refusing to bow down under pressure while rejecting the threats, intimidation and smear campaign launched by the Republican Party.
Mamdani has promised to make public transport free for all as well as freeze rent and lower the cost of living in one of the world's most expensive cities.
