Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday slammed the BJP over the house arrest of political leaders in the Valley. She said the BJP was “weaponising the pain and misery of the people” and called its approach dangerous and reprehensible.
In her post on X, she wrote, “The decision to place the political leadership under house arrest today, simply to stop us from visiting Sopore to offer condolences on the demise of Professor Abdul Gani Bhat, lays bare the harsh and undemocratic reality in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Besides, she said the recent controversy at Hazratbal Dargah was a result of deep-seated resentment.
Criticising the incident, she said, “What took place at Hazratbal Dargah, the eruption of spontaneous, raw public anger, was not just an isolated incident. It was a loud and clear message from the people who have been pushed to the edge. The BJP, however, remains wilfully blind to this truth, refusing to learn anything from the deep anguish and suppressed emotions that have been building for years now.”
She went on to accuse the BJP of keeping Kashmir in a constant state of turmoil for political gains. “The recent developments have made it clear that the present dispensation at the centre has no interest in peace or healing Kashmir; rather, they seem determined to keep the region in continuous turmoil. Weaponising the pain and misery of the people is cynical and irresponsible, as well as dangerous and utterly reprehensible,” she said.
Earlier, a viral video showed a mob defacing the national emblem on a marble plaque at the shrine, citing that sculpting figures goes against Islamic ethos.
The former CM said the authorities made the mistake of installing the board, which compelled people to register their protest.
While several people were detained for questioning, the mainstream political leadership in the Kashmir Valley demanded legal action against the WAQF vice chairperson for hurting religious sentiments and overstepping her authority.
