Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday sharply criticised the Central government for “empty symbolism” while discarding more important ongoing IndiGo flight disruptions causing chaos in the country.

She was referring to the ongoing IndiGo flight chaos that has left hundreds of Umrah pilgrims stranded in freezing conditions at the Srinagar Airport. She made these comments on the occasion of the Lok Sabha celebrating the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.

Hundreds of passengers, particularly those scheduled to depart on the Umrah pilgrimage from Srinagar, have been left heartbroken at the airport due to rostering and operational failures.

Stranded passengers have called on the government to take strong note of the situation and make necessary arrangements for the pilgrims heading to Saudi Arabia.

One elderly pilgrim from a far-flung area of north Kashmir, with tears in his eyes, said, “We travelled more than 50 kilometres to reach the airport in the chilling morning cold.”

He complained that if the company had been facing rostering issues, then how did they issue the PNR and tickets? This is cheating, and we will not go back home until arrangements are made for the Pilgrims.

In a post on X, Mehbooba said, “Parliament is busy sparring over a two-hundred-year-old Vande Mataram even as IndiGo passengers are left stranded and desperate for answers.

Instead of confronting the crises hurting people right now, the BJP seems intent on indulging in empty symbolism.” “How will this political theatre create jobs, control soaring prices or tackle the real urgent problems weighing on millions of Indians?” she asked.
