Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party chief and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said Farooq Abdullah’s recent remarks over the Pahalgam attack were disturbing and regrettable.
She made these comments following a series of incidents unfolding across the country where several Kashmiris were subjected to violence after the attack.
Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday wrote in a post on her social media handle, “Farooq sahab’s statement implicating Kashmiris in the Pahalgam terror attack is deeply disturbing & regrettable.”
“As a senior leader, that too as a Kashmiri, his statement risks fuelling divisive narratives, providing ammunition to certain media channels to further stereotype and stigmatise Kashmiris & Muslims,” she added.
“This isn’t only misleading but fatal at a time when students and traders from J&K are already facing heightened vulnerability & attacks.
“We should draw inspiration from Himanshi Narwal, who, despite the martyrdom of her husband, urged Indians not to blame and target Kashmiris or Muslims.” Mehbooba Mufti wrote in a post.
A few days ago, Dr Farooq Abdullah had said “Such kinds of attacks were not possible without the local support,” adding, “I had warned at the time when Azhar Masood was released that this man knows the terrain and could be a possibility; he was involved in it too.”
His comment on implicating locals in Pahalgam received a massive backlash back home, where people called his comment “an irresponsible behaviour, knowing that despite having no role in the attack, Kashmiris were getting assaulted outside the Valley.”
