Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to reconsider the allotment of fertile agricultural land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for establishing a security camp in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
“This is prime agricultural land in the middle of a village. There is no compulsion on the Omar Abdullah government to allot this land to BSF as the livelihood of many residents of the village is about to be affected with this decision,” Mufti said after visiting Pochal village.
She was accompanied by the party’s youth leader and current Pulwama MLA, Waheed Parra.
She said, “Omar Abdullah is the Chief Minister; he has the responsibility to intervene to protect the interests of the people. The BSF can be moved or given infertile land.”
She said she would raise the matter with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in the coming days.
During the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, the PDP had brought a land reform bill to seek protection of these lands, but Omar rejected it by terming it a bill for land grabbers, she said.
“Demolitions have intensified since the rejection of the PDP’s land protection Bill, leaving people fearful and vulnerable,” the PDP chief said.
