Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally intervene and ensure the safe return of students from the Union Territory currently stranded in Iran amid the escalating conflict.
In a post on X, the former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir wrote, “Urge PM @narendramodiji for his personal intervention to ensure their safe passage home & also @MEAIndia @DrSJaishankar to initiate evacuation efforts at the earliest.”
She highlighted that as the situation in Iran deteriorates rapidly due to tit-for-tat strikes between the United States, Israel, and Iran, thousands of Kashmiri students studying there remain stranded and face growing risks.
The Ministry of External Affairs has condoled the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and called on all parties to cease hostilities immediately.
In response, the Iranian government has assured that Indian ships and oil consignments will be permitted safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologised to Gulf countries for recent strikes but described them as essential for Iran’s safety and sovereignty. He firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s demand for unconditional surrender, stating, “Iran will not seek any kind of surrender with the United States.”
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had declared, “Iran is not seeking a ceasefire, let alone surrender. Iran will only come to the table when they are respected.”
Meanwhile, the overall death toll in the ongoing war has surpassed 1,400. Iran has acknowledged around 1,332 fatalities (mostly civilians), while the US and Israel have partially accepted these figures but have not released their own detailed casualty lists—leading experts to believe the actual numbers on all sides are significantly higher than publicly stated.
