In a moment that has drawn wide attention amid a nationwide debate on religious attire, Jharkhand Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari on Tuesday publicly honoured a hijab-wearing woman doctor during a mass appointment letter distribution programme, underlining the state government’s commitment to constitutional values, dignity and inclusive governance.
The event was organised by the Jharkhand Health Department at the NHM auditorium in Ranchi, where a large number of doctors and healthcare personnel were handed appointment letters as part of the government’s major recruitment drive.
The most striking moment of the ceremony came when Dr Ansari saluted the woman doctor, who arrived wearing a hijab, and handed her the appointment letter with visible respect. The gesture was widely seen as a symbolic assertion of religious freedom, women’s dignity and equality in public life. Addressing the gathering, Dr Ansari said that Jharkhand recognises talent and merit, not attire or religious identity.
“You are the future of Jharkhand. You are our daughters. Our government respects women, mothers and every religion. Here, identity is decided by merit, not clothing,” the health minister said.
Without naming any individual, Dr Ansari referred to a recent incident in Bihar that sparked controversy over a woman doctor’s hijab, drawing a sharp contrast between the two approaches.
“This is Jharkhand, not Bihar. Here, governance is sensitive, inclusive and rooted in respect for people’s self-respect,” he said.
He further stated that the gesture reflected the clear direction of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that development and dignity must go hand in hand.
“Our government has no association with any mindset that disrespects women. Jharkhand stands for all religions, all communities and all daughters,” he added.
