On the 53rd birth anniversary of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the Union Home Ministry has granted the mandatory legal sanction required to push forward the investigation into the singer's death in Singapore on September 19.

In a post on X, Sarma stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has approved the sanction under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), a key requirement for investigators to formally proceed against the accused persons. The CM explained that Section 208 enables Indian courts to take up cases involving crimes committed outside India, but only after the Central Government provides prior sanction.

Sarma added that this approval now allows the state to file the charge sheet and proceed “firmly and lawfully” towards trial. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to submit the charge sheet by December 10.

Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, triggering widespread grief across the Northeast and among Assamese communities globally. His sudden death led to demands from civil society, fans, and political leaders for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Earlier, the Assam government had assured that all necessary legal steps, including coordination with authorities in Singapore, would be followed to ensure the case reaches its conclusion. Tuesday’s announcement is being viewed as a major administrative step forward in a case that has remained in the public eye for months.

As the state observes Garg’s birth anniversary, the government’s reaffirmed commitment to pursue justice has offered renewed consolation to admirers of the singer whose music defined a generation. The sanction represents a significant move in the ongoing efforts to uncover the truth and deliver justice for an artist whose legacy continues to inspire millions.
