In a bid to ensure a secure and smooth electoral process, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will oversee security arrangements for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) assembly elections.
Chief Electoral Officer of J&K, PK Pole, confirmed on Saturday that MHA’s intervention aims to address the region's security challenges and facilitate an incident-free election.
The assembly polls will commence in phases, with the first set for September 18. Given the region’s history of security issues, including sporadic violence over the past decades, the MHA has developed a comprehensive security strategy to safeguard the electoral process.
Pole highlighted that the recent decrease in security incidents has been inconsistent, prompting a robust plan to manage the upcoming elections. Detailed security measures have been discussed with the MHA, including provisions for candidates, political parties, and officials.
“We are fully prepared to handle any emerging situation. The arrangements for the elections are comprehensive, with extra security allocated to areas of heightened risk, particularly in Doda, where recent terrorist activities have been noted,” Pole said.
The MHA has re-strategised its security deployments, positioning several thousand additional personnel in the terror-prone Jammu region to counteract potential threats and ensure a peaceful voting environment.
The assembly elections will be conducted in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results slated for announcement on October 4.
