A 58-year-old mid-day meal worker was reportedly murdered inside a primary school in Chinaur village of Dehra in Kangra district in broad daylight and in front of students, police said on Friday.

The accused was nabbed a few hours after the incident, which took place on Thursday afternoon. The accused had reached the school campus and reportedly attacked the woman, Salochna Devi, a resident of Chinaur, with a sickle.

Hearing the children scream, teachers rushed out of their classrooms. They saw the accused, Rakesh Kumar (48), holding a sharp weapon, while Salochna was lying in a pool of blood in the school kitchen area, police said.

The teachers asked Kumar to leave the premises, but he threatened them. Soon, teachers from a nearby school also arrived at the crime spot and started pelting stones at him, forcing him to run away.

Sulochana was immediately taken to the nearby community health centre. However, doctors declared her dead. As news of the incident spread, many parents reached the school and demanded that outsiders should not be allowed to enter the campus.

Police said a murder case has been registered. The accused, who belongs to the same village as the victim, has been arrested. Probe is underway to find out the reason which led to the brutal attack.
