An unidentified militant was killed during an ongoing encounter in the dense Chattroo forest area of Kishtwar district on Friday.
This marks the first confirmed casualty in recent days following a series of confrontations and continuing search operations in the heavily forested regions of the twin districts. A senior police officer confirmed the militant’s death and noted that due to the challenging terrain, the operation may take more time to conclude.
The encounter began on April 9, when security forces observed suspicious movement in the Chattroo forests, prompting an exchange of fire with terrorists. Prior to that, a brief encounter had been reported in the same area on Wednesday, where militants again engaged security forces.
The rugged terrain has made operations more difficult, but security personnel quickly mobilised reinforcements to cordon off the area and block any escape routes. This latest operation comes in the backdrop of a fierce encounter on March 24 in Kathua’s Sanyial area, where two militants and four policemen were killed, and three militants managed to escape.
The ongoing manhunt for those fugitives has now stretched into its 20th day as security forces continue combing the region.
