Fresh violence struck Manipur’s Jiribam district on Saturday, with militants launching an early morning assault on a village near Borobekra police station.
The militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, began firing and detonated bombs around 5 am, according to an official source.
Police and CRPF personnel engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire with the attackers, and additional security forces were dispatched to the area.
No casualties were reported at the time, but elderly residents, women, and children were evacuated to safer locations by security forces.
Borobekra, approximately 30 km from Jiribam town and surrounded by dense forests and mountainous terrain, has seen several attacks since ethnic violence erupted in May last year.
This latest flare-up follows recent peace talks in New Delhi involving MLAs from the warring Meitei and Kuki communities, in an attempt to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in the state.
