At least three people were killed and six security personnel remain missing after a landslide struck a military camp in Chhaten, North Sikkim, on Sunday evening, a defence official confirmed.
The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall, occurred at around 7 pm. Rescue efforts have been ongoing amid difficult weather and rugged terrain, the official said in a statement on Monday.
"Three bodies have been recovered so far, and four individuals were rescued with minor injuries," the official stated. "Rescue teams are working round the clock under challenging conditions to locate the six missing personnel."
The Army and local rescue teams continue to clear debris and search the area with support from drones and heavy machinery. The region has experienced persistent rainfall, raising fears of further landslides.
Authorities have appealed for calm and assured that all possible resources are being mobilised to aid the rescue and relief operations. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed his condolences and praised the efforts of the security forces.
