A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in Purulia district, following which police arrested seven accused after a swift investigation. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police officials said.

The girl, a resident of Purulia town, went missing on Friday evening after leaving her home, telling her family she was going to a friend’s house. When she did not return late into the night and repeated attempts to contact her by phone failed, her family became anxious. Her father later lodged a complaint of abduction at the Purulia Sadar police station.

Police swung into action immediately after receiving the complaint and launched search operations in various areas. The girl was rescued late on the same night.

During questioning, she alleged that while she was walking alone on the road at night, a group of seven to eight youths stopped her and forcibly abducted her. She was allegedly taken to a cultivated field near the railway tracks, where the crime took place. After the incident, she managed to escape and was attempting to return home when the police search team found her.

Given the seriousness of the allegations, the police promptly took the girl to a hospital for medical examination. At the same time, a coordinated search was launched to trace those involved.

Based on the victim’s statement, raids were conducted in different areas, leading to the apprehension of seven accused. One of them reportedly fell ill and was taken to hospital, while the remaining six were taken to the police station.
