Police said on Monday that the 17-year-old son of a village head had been detained for allegedly casting votes multiple times during the fourth phase of polling in the Farrukhabad seat on May 13.
The repolling at the polling booth where the alleged incident took place is scheduled for May 25.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared a video of the incident on social media. The video shows a teenager pressing the EVM button seven to eight times in front of the BJP candidate in the constituency, Mukesh Rajput.
The son of the village head of Khiriya Pamaran, Anil Thakur, allegedly cast votes about seven to eight times at booth number 343 under the Nayagaon police station limits. The teenager recorded the video of his act and uploaded it on social media. It gained traction after being shared by Samajwadi Party chief and Rahul Gandhi on their respective social media handles.
Officials in Lucknow said repolling in polling booth number 343 at Primary school, Khiriya Pamaran, in Farrukhabad constituency in Etah district, will be held on May 25 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh, Navdeep Rinwa, has stated that the Election Commission of India has received a recommendation for repolling in a specific polling station.
Naval Kishore Shakya, the SP candidate from the Farrukhabad Lok Sabha seat, filed a written complaint after the polling that took place on May 13 during the fourth phase. Following this, a case was registered.
Shakya also shared a video on social media and lodged a complaint with the District Election Officer.
A case has been registered under the Representation of People’s Act and IT Act.
The Farrukhabad Lok Sabha seat consists of four assembly segments: Kaimganj (SC), Amritpur, Farrukhabad, and Bhojpur, all located in the Farrukhabad district. The assembly segment of Aliganj is located in the Etah district.
