A minor girl, who had visited the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, for treatment was allegedly sexually assaulted by a youth inside the Trauma Care Unit on Wednesday afternoon. The accused, identified as Amit Mallick, has been arrested by the Bhawanipur police.
The incident comes in the wake of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital last year as well as recent incident of gang-rape in a private medical College in Durgapur , which have heightened public anger across the state.
According to reports, the minor visited SSKM’s OPD on Wednesday afternoon. Amit Mallick, a former temporary employee of Shambhunath Pandit Hospital and currently employed temporarily at NRS Hospital, allegedly took the girl to the toilet in the Trauma Care Unit and assaulted her while her family members were occupied with getting tickets.
"The accused had previously worked as a ward boy on a contractual basis at SSKM and used old hospital uniforms to enter the premises unnoticed. After the assault, he fled the hospital but was later identified through CCTV footage," said a police officer.
Mallick was arrested from the Dhapa area, where he resides. A case has been registered against him under the POCSO Act.
