The Uttarakhand government on Tuesday formed the State Minority Education Authority, which will replace the Madrasa Board. The Madrasa Board’s term will end in July this year.

A notification in this regard was issued by Parag Madhukar Dhakate, special secretary to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. As per the notification, Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (retd) has cleared the formation of the authority and the appointment of 12 members, including the chairman.

All the members belong to minority communities. Surjit Singh Gandhi has been appointed as the chairman. Other members include Rakesh Jain, Syed Ali Hamid, Pema Tenzin, Elba Madrile, Robina Aman, Gurmeet Singh, social worker Rajendra Bisht, and retired officer Chandrashekhar Bhatt.

Apart from these, the Directors General of School Education, the State Council of Educational Research and Training, and Minority Welfare have been included as ex officio members of the authority.

Last year in August, the Uttarakhand Minority Education Bill-2025 was passed. It received the Governor’s assent in October. Under this law, the Madrasa Board will be abolished in the hill state from July 2026, and the State Minority Education Authority will be formed to bring all minority educational institutions under its control.

The new law allows minority educational institution status not only to Muslims but also to other minority communities in the state, including Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Christians, and Parsis. Earlier, this recognition was limited only to the Muslim community.
