Jammu and Kashmir's chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest on Monday, preventing him from addressing a scheduled gathering at Imam Bara Bemina.
The Mirwaiz had been invited by Aga Syed Haadi to deliver a sermon on the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the Battle of Karbala in the 7th century. However, security forces prevented him from reaching the venue as a precautionary measure.
In a statement issued from his residence, the Mirwaiz reiterated his call for communal harmony, saying the people of Kashmir have always stood for mutual respect and brotherhood.
Mirwaiz added that reverence for the Ahl-e-Bayt and the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) remains an integral part of the Valley's shared spiritual heritage.
He stressed the need for unity and restraint, urging all sections of society to uphold dignity and patience and not allow divisive forces to weaken the centuries-old bonds of communal coexistence.
On Friday, he had delivered a sermon at the historic Jamia Masjid on the occasion of Youm-e-Ashoora. The Mirwaiz drew parallels from the tragedy of Karbala. He had said, “Imam Hussain set the example of truth, patience, justice and sacrifice and said it reminds humanity that while power may appear strong temporarily, it is ultimately truth and moral courage that prevail.”
“Imam Hussain (RA) was not in search of war or confrontation. He stood for the principle that differences must be addressed through truth, adherence to the principles of Islam and sincerity through conversation. But when those before him chose the path of oppression and violence instead, history recorded their failure forever,” the Mirwaiz said.
