Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, on Sunday urged the Central Government not to punish innocent Kashmiris in its quest for justice for the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.
In a statement posted on his social media handle, Mirwaiz expressed his concern over the ongoing demolition of homes belonging to alleged terrorists and their associates in the Valley.
"While Kashmiris collectively condemn the heinous crime at Pahalgam, and it is crucial to bring its perpetrators to justice, indiscriminate arrests and videos circulating on social media of demolition of houses and neighborhoods are disturbing and distressing. I urge the authorities, that in seeking justice for the innocent victims, not to punish innocent Kashmiri families," he said.
This plea comes as the authorities have launched a widespread crackdown on the terror ecosystem in Kashmir, demolishing the homes of nine alleged terrorists or their associates in response to the recent attack.
The Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, mostly tourists, has led to increased security measures across the region.
