The disappearance of a four-year-old girl from Nongrah Nonglum in Shillong ended in tragedy on Monday evening when her body was discovered at an under-construction building near her home.
The victim, identified as Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai, had gone missing on Sunday morning around 8 am. Her family immediately lodged a missing complaint at Rynjah Police Station, while residents and the Dorbar Shnong launched a community search.
The grim discovery was made by a construction worker. Police personnel from Rynjah rushed to the spot, with forensic experts and a dog squad later joining to collect evidence. The child’s body was subsequently taken to NEIGRIHMS for post-mortem examination.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that the case is being treated as a suspected homicide. “We are registering a murder case and the family has gone to file a formal complaint,” he said.
Expressing shock, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said he had directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation. “Those responsible must be brought to justice without delay,” he said.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SP (City) Herbert Kharkongor has been formed to probe the incident. Police said several individuals would be questioned and the autopsy report will help determine the cause of death.
Authorities have also urged people, including social media users and YouTubers, not to circulate photos or videos of the minor online.
