The body of a 19-year-old Delhi University student from Tripura, missing for six days, was recovered from the Yamuna River near Geeta Colony on Saturday, police confirmed.
Identified as Sneha Debnath, the undergraduate had reportedly left her north Delhi residence in a cab on July 7 and was last seen near the Signature Bridge. A handwritten note recovered from her belongings indicated an intent to end her life, according to investigators.
“She was not upset with her studies,” a police official familiar with the investigation said. “The reason for her distress was linked to her family.”
The Delhi Police traced Sneha’s movements using technical surveillance and narrowed her last known location to the Signature Bridge area. Her body was found around 10 kilometres downstream, beneath a flyover in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony locality.
“The cab driver who dropped her at the site has corroborated the statement. Some eyewitnesses said they saw a girl standing on the bridge and later disappearing from the spot,” read a statement issued by the police.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force and police search units combed the riverbanks from Nigam Bodh Ghat in north Delhi to Noida in Uttar Pradesh. It was during this search that her body was located and sent for post-mortem examination.
Investigators revealed that Sneha had sent emails and messages to close friends in the early hours of July 7. According to her peers, she had appeared emotionally disturbed for several months.
Her family, who had travelled from Tripura to the capital in hope of finding her, identified her body following its recovery.

Concerns have also been raised by her family and friends over the security infrastructure around the Signature Bridge. They alleged that none of the CCTV cameras in the vicinity were functional at the time of her disappearance, raising questions about surveillance failures at a high-footfall location.
Sneha’s death has left both the student community and her home state reeling. A final report will be issued following the completion of the autopsy and forensic examination.
